Christian Persecutions in Iraq
Home to the Assyrian people, Iraq and the lands surrounding it have held Christians since the beginning of Christianity. Iraq is home to the Assyrian Church of the East, Ancient Church of the East, Chaldean Catholic Church, Syriac Orthodox Church and Syriac Catholic church, all using Classical Syriac as their liturgial language. While persecuted under the Saddam regime, the Iraq war and resulting ISIL insurgency has taken a terrible toll on the Christian populations.
