The Litany of the Saints, one of the six publicly approved litanies for public use, traces its origins back to the fifth century in the procession of Saint Mamertus, Bishop of Vienna. It was also found in Saint Gregory the Great's Litania Septiformis (sevenfold procession) which came after the floods and famine of 590 AD. It is generally recited on All Saint's Day and is part of the Easter Vigil Mass and Ordination Mass.
When not read privately, the red portions indicate a response by the congregation.
